Azam Khan disqualified from membership of UP Legislative Assembly

Azam Khan on Friday was disqualified from the membership of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, announced Office of UP Assembly Speaker. This ruling came one day after SP leader was sentenced to three years in jail along with a fine of Rs 2,000 in a hate speech case of 2019.
Rampur MLA Azam Khan has lost his Assembly membership as his eventual imprisonment term is longer than two years. According to the 2013 Supreme Court judgment if an MLA, MLC or MP is convicted in a criminal case and gets jailed for a minimum of two years then he/she loses membership of the house with immediate effect.

Azam Khan won the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Rampur (UP) but he vacated this seat after being elected to the UP state assembly in March 2022. The SP leader had won the 2022 assembly election from Rampur while being lodged in Sitapur jail.

Earlier on Thursday, the Samajwadi Party leader and two other accused were sentenced to three years in prison along with a fine of Rs 2,000 in a hate speech case filed against him over his speech against UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. However, he has been granted bail and given a week’s time to appeal against the sentence.
A case was registered against Khan in Rampur in April 2019 for allegedly making provocative remarks against the Uttar Pradesh CM and the then District Magistrate of Rampur, Aunjaneya Kumar Singh.

During the 2019 Lok Sabha election campaign, Khan had used provocative remarks against the then Rampur district magistrate Aunjaneya Kumar Singh, chief minister Yogi Adityanath, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress candidate Sanjay Kapoor.

Earlier this year, Azam Khan was released from Sitapur district jail, a day after the Supreme Court granted him interim bail in an alleged case of cheating.

The SP leader was also granted bail in a cheating case lodged at the police station in Rampur.Khan has been lodged in Sitapur jail since February 2020 as many cases are registered against him.

Earlier, in a big relief to the SP leader, the Allahabad High Court on October 1, 2022, had put his arrest on hold. The matter pertains to the disappearance of machines used for construction in 2017 for which a case was registered on September 19, this year.

A person named Baqur Khan brought the case to the fore. The missing machinery including bulldozers, carriers and other materials was later found on the premises of Muhammad Ali Jauhar University. The Allahabad HC also sought a reply from the Uttar Pradesh government on this matter.

On May 10, 2022, the Allahabad HC granted interim bail to Khan in a case related to wrongful possession of Waqf Board property.

Azam Khan began his political career by winning the 1980 assembly election on Janata Party (Secular) ticket from Rampur. He has served as a minister in both Akhilesh Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav governments.

Amid strong wave of criticism by all the opposition against Congress President Rahul Gandhi‘s disqualification as MP, JDS Chief & former Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy held meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at her Kalighat residence on Friday.In the backdrop of Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification as MP, Banerjee and Kumaraswamy have reportedly discussed about the role of BJP against the opposition parties and about the present political situation in the country, people in the know said.

“The coming election in Karnataka has also been discussed by the two leaders apart from the present political situation in the country,” sources said.

Amid strong “Third Front” buzz, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met Naveen Pattanaik in Odisha on Thursday. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav had met Banerjee last Friday at her residence. Banerjee had held discussions. about strategies for the coming Lok Sabha polls and alliance of regional parties.Yadav has said that the regional parties are trying to create an alliance or Front and Banerjee is working towards it. Telangana Chief Minister KCR and the Bihar chief minister are also proactive about the alliance of regional parties, Yadav stated.

The meetings with non-Congress, non-BJP leaders are said to be part of the Trinamool’s efforts to ensure an “opposition unity with regional powers”.

“Mamata Banerjee will connect with various like-minded regional parties nationally, who are capable of fighting BJP in their own states,” Trinamool sources said.

Congress top brass meets after Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification

The Congress‘ top brass, including party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and former AICC chief Sonia Gandhi, met on Friday to deliberate on the party’s strategy going forward after Rahul Gandhi‘s disqualification from Lok Sabha. A meeting was already scheduled for Friday evening but after Rahul Gandhi’s conviction, top leaders assembled at 6 pm at the party headquarters with his disqualification being top of the agenda. Besides Kharge and Sonia Gandhi, Congress general secretaries Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, K C Venugopal, Jairam Ramesh, Rajiv Shukla and Tariq Anwar, senior leaders P Chidambaram, Anand Sharma, Ambika Soni, Mukul Wasnik, Salman Khurshid and Pawan Kumar Bansal, among others, were also present at the meeting.

Sources said Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification and party’s strategy and plans for agitations were top of the agenda at the meeting.

Rahul Gandhi was on Friday disqualified from Lok Sabha following his conviction by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case, an action the party termed an attempt to “silence” his voice as it vowed to fight the battle legally and politically.
