A consortium led by a Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani on Saturday announced that they have submitted an offer to take full control of Manchester United.

However, Thani did not give any details on the amount proposed in the bid for the football club.

As per reports, British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe has also lodged a bid to buy the club. Thani confirmed his submission of a bid for 100 percent of Manchester United. Friday was the soft deadline for bidders.

The only other bidder to have officially declared an interest to buy the football club is Ratcliffe’s company Ineos. The company is interested to expand a sporting portfolio that already includes French side Nice and Swiss team FC Lausanne. The company has also a cycling team– Ineos Grenadiers.

As per reports, the price of the club could reach a record $6 billion.

Manchester United’s current owners, the US-based Glazer family had announced in November that they were open to a sale or investment in the football club. Subsequently, it prompted talk of a bidding war between Qatari and Saudi Arabian interests.

A sale price of $6 billion for the football club would smash the record fee for a football club, set by Chelsea last year.

Manchester United are one of the most successful clubs in English football history. However, their performance graph has gone down. The club has not won the Premier League since 2013.

Team India’s Mr 360-degree batsman Suryakumar Yadav performed miserably with the bat in the recently-concluded ODI series against Australia. The aggressive batter was dismissed for three golden ducks in three matches against the visitors.

Though SKY has impressed fans across the globe with his whirlwind batting in T20Is, he has not been able to replicate his T20 success in the 50-over format of the game. He only averages around 24 in ODIs which is not a justice to his immense talent.

With Suryakumar failing to perform consistently in ODIs, fans have called for the inclusion of Sanju Samson in India’s ODI squad. However, legendary all-rounder and former World Cup-winning India skipper Kapil Dev has thrown his weight behind the beleaguered Suryakumar.

As per Kapil, the coach, captain, and selectors are doing the right thing by backing Suryakumar.

“A cricketer like Surya who has played so well will always get more chances. Don’t compare Surya with Sanju Samson, it doesn’t seem right. If Sanju goes through a bad phase then you will talk about somebody else. This should not happen,” said Kapil.

“If the team management has decided to back Suryakumar then he should be given more chances. Yes, people will talk. Let them give their opinion but ultimately it’s the management’s call,” he added.

At a time when the BJD-led government is claiming that a clean and corruption-free government is ruling the State, the ground reality tells a different story.

The residents of Dhumant Panchayat under Sadar block office in Kendrapara district on Thursday staged a sit-in at the block office, protesting against officers demanding PC (percentage commission) to get their work done.

“I was awarded a project worth Rs 1.5 lakh. They deducted Rs 25,000. From the rest Rs 1.25 lakh, Rs 6,700 was again deducted towards the PC of some officers including the chairman,” alleged a contractor, Chittaranjan Mallik.

“In the PC transaction, all from top to bottom, including the BDO madam, are involved. Sarpanch’s middlemen are demanding Rs2,000 to provide ration cards,” alleged Debadutta Jena, a Dhumata Panchayat resident.

When asked, Kendrapada block chairperson Rashmita Sethi said, “I am not aware of such allegations. I will take action after receiving complaints.”

A similar picture emerged from Koraput district.

Dambaru Jani, a resident of Dinda Rajaguda village under Boriguma block, is a PMAY beneficiary. Two years ago, he was awarded a house under the yojana. Instead of Rs 1,30,000, he was given Rs 1,00,000. For the rest Rs 30,000, he has been moving from the block office to the bank, but to no avail. Family members have reportedly been told that the money has been kept towards PC.

“For the last installment of Rs 30,000, my father has been moving from block office to bank,” alleged Dambaru Jani’s daughter.
The PC practice is also rampant at Soro municipality in Balasore district.

A contractor of Soro area, Abinash Patra had constructed a market complex at Anantapur square at a cost of Rs 51 lakh. But his bill is yet to be cleared. Patra alleged the Municipality JE is deliberately harassing him as he didn’t pay the PC as he demanded.

The Opposition too raised the PC issue in the House on Wednesday.

“Here BDOs demand 40 percent PC. Even the Vigilance department officials are being caught red-handed while accepting bribes. They (BJD) are earning money through this unfair means and spending the same in elections,” alleged Leader of Opposition (LoP), Jayanarayan Mishra.

In his reaction, ruling BJD MLA Amar Satpathy said, “Anyone found guilty, action has been taken against them which was not the case earlier. They have also been convicted. We are not allowing corruption.”
