Meanwhile, such an unexpected price rise of the yellow metal has raised concerns among buyers. Consumers have started avoiding purchasing the precious metal for themselves as well as for presenting it to relatives in marriages.

“We are in panic after learning about the price rise of gold. The soaring price has restricted us from buying the precious metal for ourselves and gift purposes for marriages,” said Kamini Pradhan, a resident of Bhubaneswar.

Expressing concern over the matter, market experts have attributed American and European banking crises as the reason behind the soaring gold price.

“The investors have lost faith in the stocks after the banking crisis in America to Europe. Now they are withdrawing their investments from the capital market, investing in gold for which the price is increasing,” said Trinath Lenka, a market expert.

The market expert also predicts that gold prices will keep surging until the banking crisis normalises.

Meanwhile, jewellers believe that the price of the yellow metal may soon reach Rs 70000 if the trend continues.

“Be it commodity market or gold experts, they are predicting that the price will reach Rs 70000. The price increased by Rs 4000 within a week and it is unpredictable. We will know about the new price on Monday. Currently, the customers who can purchase 10 grams are purchasing 5 grams.” said Pramod Rath, Business Head, J&T Gems & Jewellery.

Not just gold, the silver price has also followed the trend. In the last week, the price of silver has increased by Rs 5000 per kilogram. While the price of silver per kilogram was Rs 65000 on March 12, it has reached Rs 70000 today.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday inaugurated and laid foundation stones of projects worth Rs 1952 crore in his own district, Ganjam.

During his marathon visits, the CM addressed three meetings at Kabisuryanagar, Hinjlicut and Chatrapur in Ganjam district. On this occasion, he also distributed interest-free loans and assistance to SHG women.

On this occasion, he urged people to make Ganjam as number one district.

“If you continue to cooperate, Ganjam district could be the number one district in the country,” Patnaik said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged that Ganjam district is in the CM’s focus because the party is struggling with infighting here.

“The CM’s Ganjam visit is a political one. He is trying to organize his disorganized party in the district,” said State BJP  Vice President Bhrugu Baxipatra.

On the other hand, the BJD refuted the infighting allegation.

“We don’t have information regarding infighting in our party. People love Naveen Babu. So anyone who will get a ticket will win the election,” said Srikant Sahu, BJD leader.

Out of 51 constable posts reserved for women in Sambalpur district, only six are fulfilled. From this, a conviction has emerged that Odisha girls are not physically fit enough to be selected as cops.

Hundreds of female aspirants took part in the written and physical tests for 51 female constable posts lying vacant in Sambalpur district. But only six of them could manage to scrape through. This means, only 11.76 percent of posts are fulfilled, and 45 posts still remain vacant.

“It was really tough to cover 1600 metres in eight minutes. Here, 90 percent of girls were disqualified. The next course of action will be decided by the police headquarters,” said Sambalpur SP B Gangadhar.

Women candidates’ poor performance was reported not only from Sambalpur district but also from other districts.

The tests were conducted across the State to fulfill 4,790 constable posts in 35 police districts. Of the total posts, 1595 posts were reserved for female candidates.

But, surprisingly enough, when it came to physical fitness, they failed miserably. While six out of 51 posts are fulfilled in Sambalpur district, nine out of 31 in Nabarangpur district, 10 out of 16 in Malkangiri district and 37 out of 50 posts in Rayagada district are fulfilled.

The poor performance of girls in the constable tests leaves several questions to be asked like are the girls lagging behind in physical fitness? Are they not receiving physical training at the school and college levels?

While retired police officers suggest physical eligibility tests from the school level, physical trainers blamed the present education system in educational institutions.

“It is seen in Odisha that girls are not able to meet the criteria fixed for a police job,” said Batakrushna Tripathy, former IG of Odisha.

“Had these candidates received physical training in their schools and colleges, they would have not failed in the tests,” observed Y Jagannath Rao, former police officer.

According to Captain Sarita Naik, it is due to the fault in the education system. “There is no facility for the girl students to improve their physical fitness in colleges. Priority should be given to physical fitness at school and college levels,” she said.
