Chris Rock berates Will Smith for Oscars slap, takes on Meghan Markle racism claims – National | Globalnews.ca
Rock, 58, finally hit back at Will Smith during his livestreamed Netflix standup special, Chris Rock: Selective Outrage on Saturday night, a year after the infamous Oscars slap.
The comedian told the crowd at the Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore that he was going to do his best to perform standup “without offending nobody.”
“I’m going to try my best, because you never know who might get triggered,” he joked. “People always say words hurt. Anybody who says words hurt has never been punched in the face.”
During last year’s Oscars ceremony in March, Rock was slapped by Smith after he made a G.I. Jane joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who suffers from the skin condition alopecia. Smith shouted for Rock to “keep my wife’s name out of your f–-ing mouth!”
Smith later apologized for slapping Rock. The actor was banned from the Academy Awards for 10 years.
On Saturday, Rock, who has mostly avoided commenting on the Oscars slap, said the whole world watched as he “took that hit like Pacquiao.”
“You all know what happened to me, getting smacked by Suge Smith,” Rock said, referencing former record executive Suge Knight, who pleaded no contest to armed robbery and assault with a firearm in 1995. “It still hurts. I got Summertime ringing in my ears.” (The song Summertime was released by Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff in 1991.)
“But I’m not a victim, baby,” he said. “You’ll never see me on Oprah or Gayle crying.”
In the profanity-laden segment, Rock said he’d always admired Smith before being slapped. He joked that he now watches Smith-led movies like Emancipation, which sees Smith play an individual self-emancipated from slavery, “just to see him get whupped.”
He added that it was unfair for Smith to target him, given their stark size difference.
“We are not the same size. This guy does movies with his shirt off,” Rock said, earning a round of laughter from the audience. “You will never see me do a movie with my shirt off. If I’m in a movie getting open-heart surgery, I got on a sweater.”
Rock also answered the commonly asked question as to why he did not do anything back to Smith — or press any charges — on the night of the Oscars slap. His answer was simple: “Because I got parents.”
“You know what my parents taught me? Don’t fight in front of white people,” he said.
Meghan Markle and the royal racism row
Rock’s standup special — Netflix’s first foray into livestreaming — saw the comedian talk about myriad trending topics, including yoga pants, the Kardashians, abortion rights and the U.S. Capitol riot.
One such Selective Outrage segment was at the expense of Meghan Markle and the Royal Family.
Rock claimed that everyone nowadays, including Markle, is “trying to be the victim,” even when they are not. The comedian referenced Markle’s 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey in which she claimed certain unnamed members of the Royal Family had “concerns and conversations about how dark” her son Archie’s skin would be.
Though he acknowledged the British monarchy’s history of colonialism and called them “the original racists,” Rock joked that Markle’s claims about the royals were “just some in-law s—t.”
Rock said Markle “seems like a nice lady, just complaining.”
“Black girl trying to be accepted by her white in-laws,” Rock said. “Oh, it’s hard. It’s so hard, it’s very hard — but it ain’t as hard as a white girl trying to be accepted by her Black in-laws.”
“If you Black, and you want to be accepted by your white in-laws, then you need to marry a Kardashian,” he joked. “Because they accept everybody. Kris Jenner is like the Statue of Liberty.”
Selective Outrage is Rock’s second special for Netflix, following 2018’s Tamborine. The standup performances are part of a US$40-million deal Rock signed with the streaming giant in 2016.

Gwyneth Paltrow to take the stand in $300K ski crash lawsuit – National | Globalnews.ca
Terry Sanderson has accused Paltrow, 50, of negligence and is suing for US$300,000 (about $410,000). He alleged the Goop founder collided with him while skiing at Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah, “knocking him down hard, knocking him out.”
In the complaint filed in 2019, Sanderson, 76, said the accident left him with “permanent traumatic brain injury, 4 broken ribs, pain, suffering, loss of enjoyment of life.” He maintains that Paltrow left him collapsed on the slope and skied away.
In a counterclaim, Paltrow said Sanderson skied into her in a “full body hit,” giving her minor injuries that prevented her from skiing the next day. She claims he apologized to her after the accident.
Paltrow said she only left the scene of the accident after a Deer Valley Resort employee gave confirmation she could depart.
She also alleged Sanderson has said before that he does not have a clear memory of the accident.
In 2019, Sanderson classified the accident as a hit-and-run but that was later struck down by a judge. Any mention of incidences after the collision — including an allegation from Sanderson that a resort employee who did not witness the crash skied off and accused Sanderson of being responsible for the accident — were also disallowed.
Sanderson’s original lawsuit sought $3.1 million in damages.
In her counterclaim, Paltrow is seeking only $1 in damages (a symbolic gesture), and capital for her lawyer’s fees.
The trial is set to begin on March 21 in Utah. To win the civil suit, Sanderson must demonstrate the burden of proof and prove his injuries were directly caused by the ski collision.

Fans petition for Pedro Pascal to be 2023 Calgary Stampede parade marshal | Globalnews.ca
A Change.org petition wants Pedro Pascal, who plays Joel in the TV show, to lead the charge.
The parade marshal is usually announced at the end of May or early June.
Pascal spent time in Calgary and across the province filming the hit Crave series, including the Alberta legislature, the Bow River, the Ranchland Inn in Nanton, the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), Canmore Engine Bridge and Waterton Lakes National Park.
In fact, in episode 1, When You’re Lost in the Darkness, Calgary’s downtown is used as a stand-in for Boston, and a specially designed set situated in the industrial area behind the Calgary Stampede grounds serves at the show’s Boston Quarantine Zone (QZ.)
Pascal has also spoken about his love for Alberta, like exploring the mountains and seeing the northern lights.
As of 8 a.m. Monday, March 20, the petition had about 4,700 names.
Actor Kevin Costner was parade marshal in 2022.

Bruce Willis’ wife shares tearful message about grief on actor’s 68th birthday – National | Globalnews.ca
In an emotional video posted to Instagram on Sunday, Heming Willis, 44, said she “started the morning by crying.”
“I think it’s important that you see all sides of this,” she told her followers, referring to the struggles of dealing with Willis’ frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
In February, Willis’ family shared an update that the actor’s aphasia has progressed into FTD, a condition that often strikes younger patients than other forms of dementia. Symptoms include difficulty with speech and movement and gradual memory loss.
Heming Willis said people always call her “strong” for supporting her husband.

She continued: “But I’m also raising two kids in this, so sometimes in our lives we have to put our big girl panties on and get to it, and that’s what I’m doing.”
Willis and Heming Willis share two daughters, 10 and eight years old. Willis also has three other daughters with ex-wife Demi Moore.
Heming Willis said she experiences “times of sadness” and “grief” every day, but they were especially strong on Willis’ birthday.
She grew teary eyed as she spoke about editing another Instagram post that included several clips of Willis and his family over the years. Heming Willis called the videos “a knife in my heart.”
Alongside the video, also posted Sunday, Heming Willis wrote: “My birthday wish for Bruce is that you continue to keep him in your prayers and highest vibrations because his sensitive Pisces soul will feel it. Thank you so much for loving and caring for him too.”
Willis’ ex-wife Moore, 60, also shared a video, this one from Willis’ birthday party. In the video, Willis, who is missing a tooth, is seen blowing out his birthday candles atop a pie.
“Right at it!” Willis declared, stumbling slightly. Thrice his family chanted “Hip-hip-hooray!” before they embraced Willis.
Willis retired from acting in March 2022. At the time, his family said he was “experiencing some health issues … which are impacting his cognitive abilities.”
According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, FTD is an umbrella term for a group of rare disorders that most often affect the parts of the brain associated with personality and behaviour. Approximately five to 10 per cent of all diagnosed dementia cases are FTD, but the condition accounts for about 20 per cent of all young onset dementia cases diagnosed in people under 65.
