Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund Increases Stake in Both Toei, Nintendo

Reuters reported on Friday that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), chaired by the kingdom’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has raised is stake in Toei Co., Ltd. from 5% to 6.03%.
Arab News also reported on February 17 that Public Investment Fund similarly raised its stake in Nintendo to 8.26%. PIF originally acquired a 5.01% stake in Nintendo in May 2022, and then raised that stake to 6.07% in January before this latest raise in February.
The PIF previously disclosed in February 2022 it purchased more than 5% in shares for Japanese developers CAPCOM and Nexon, and also has shares in other game developers and publishers, such as Koei Tecmo, Activision-Blizzard, Electronic Arts, and Take-Two Interactive.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman also founded the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Foundation — also known as MiSK — which owns the Saudi Arabian media company Manga Productions. Manga Productions has previously collaborated with Toei Animation on a number of anime projects, including “The Woodcutter’s Treasure” short, Future’s Folktales, and The Journey. Electronic Gaming Development Company, another company under MiSK, announced in February 2022 that it now owns a 96.18% stake in Japanese game developer SNK.
In February 2021, the U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence assessed that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman approved an operation in Istanbul, Turkey to capture or kill Jamal Khashoggi. Khashoggi was a Saudi journalist who relocated to the United States and wrote for The Washington Post newspaper before being killed in 2018. The Saudi Arabian government “completely reject[ed]” the U.S. assessment. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has also been criticized for pursuing a war in Yemen that caused a humanitarian disaster and for cracking down on dissenting voices. He has alternately been praised for ending a ban on women drivers in 2018.

ReedPop, ESA to re-evaluate E3’s future after companies declined to appear

Event production company ReedPop announced on Friday that the physical and digital versions of the E3 2023 video game expo have both been canceled. ReedPop added that it and Entertainment Software Association (ESA) “will re-evaluate the future of E3.”
ESA announced on September 26 that it would partner with ReedPop to bring back the in-person E3 event on June 13-16. E3 Business Days would have taken place from June 13-15, and would be reserved for industry personnel. E3 Gamer Days would have been on June 15-16, and they would have taken place in a different hall from the industry area. There would have also been partnered digital events and showcases before and during the show, starting on June 11.
IGN had reported in January that “multiple knowledgeable sources” told the news agency that Microsoft Xbox, Sony, and Nintendo would not participate in E3 2023. Nintendo confirmed to multiple gaming press outlets last month that it would not be attending the E3 2023 event. Nintendo‘s statement to IGN explained that “this year’s E3 show didn’t fit into [its] plans,” but added it would “continue to be a strong supporter of the ESA and E3.”
Microsoft Xbox confirmed to IGN on March 10 that it would not exhibit on the E3 show floor, but would host their Xbox Games Showcase on June 11, and would co-stream that event as part of E3 Digital (before today’s cancellation announcement).
Sony declined to appear at E3 in 2019, and had not appeared since.
Game developer and publisher SEGA and Tencent subsidiary company Level Infinite both confirmed to IGN on Tuesday that they would not attend the E3 2023 video game expo event.
E3 last had a physical event in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic. It was “exploring options for an online E3 event” after canceling the physical event the summer of 2020, but eventually decided not to present an online version.

Kodansha USA Publishing announced that it has licensed the Gachiakuta and Pass the Monster Meat, Milady! manga for print release in fall, and the Love, That’s an Understatement for digital release in April.
Title: Gachiakuta
Author: Kei Urana
Debut Date: Fall 2023
Summary: A boy lives in a floating town, where the poor scrape by and the rich live a sumptuous life, simply casting their garbage off the side, into the abyss. When he’s falsely accused of murder, though, his wrongful conviction leads to an unimaginable punishment—exile off the edge, with the rest of the trash. Down on the surface, the cast-off waste of humanity has bred vicious monsters, and to travel the path to vengeance against those who cast him into Hell, a boy will have to become a warrior…
Urana launched the manga in Kodansha‘s Weekly Shōnen Magazine in February 2022. Hideyoshi Ando is credited for graffiti design. Kodansha published the manga’s fifth compiled volume on February 17.
Urana had revealed last August that the “overseas version” of the manga was in production.

Title: Pass the Monster Meat, Milady! (Akujiki Reijо̄ to Kyо̄ketsu Kо̄shaku ~Sono Mamono, Watashi ga Oishiku Itadakimasu!~)
Authors: Chika Mizube (illustrations), Kanata Hoshi (original story), Peperon (original character design)
Debut Date: Fall 2023
Summary: Like any proper noble lady, one must have certain acquired tastes. For Melphiera Marchalrayd, she just happens to crave a rather exotic protein—monsters! But do not judge! Despite its bad reputation, monster meat can be used in exquisite cuisine and Melphiera is determined to change the kingdom’s opinion of it! Unfortunately, since debuting in society, Melphiera has been struggling to find her perfect match…until she meets the fearless “Blood-Mad Duke” of Galbraith!
The manga based on the novel series of the same name debuted in pixiv ‘s “Palcy” manga app in 2021. The manga’s fifth volume shipped in Japan on Thursday.

Title: Love, That’s an Understatement (Hikaeme ni Ittemo, Kore wa Ai)
Author: Fujimomo
Debut Date: April 25
Spare eraser? Check. Extra folding umbrella? Check. First aid kit? Check. Cool and collected high school student Risa Amakawa has something in her heavy bag for every situation, and the last thing she needs—or knows how to ask for—is anyone’s help. When she saves a beat-up delinquent in the park one rainy evening, she refuses any sort of repayment. But it turns out that saving the notorious Zen Ohira buys her the attention of some unsavory characters. As Zen keeps swooping in to help her out of one pickle after another, her feelings about relying on anyone but herself—and her feelings toward Zen—slowly begin to change… A new romcom from the author of Lovesick Ellie!
The manga debuted in Kodansha‘s Dessert magazine in July 2021. The third compiled book volume shipped in Japan on March 13.
Fujimomo launched the Lovesick Ellie (Koi Wazurai no Ellie) manga in Kodansha‘s Dessert magazine in July 2015, and ended the manga in May 2020..
