‘Play it Cool, Guys’ Manga Gets Live-Action Series in April
Visual teases cast for series debuting on April 14
Kokone Nata‘s Play It Cool, Guys (Cool Doji Danshi) manga is inspiring a live-action series on TV Tokyo on April 14. TV Tokyo opened an official website on Friday, and it reveals a visual that teases the cast:

Hiroaki Yuasa, Yuka Eda, and Akina Yanagi are directing the series. Hiroyuki Komine is writing the screenplay.
The manga’s television anime adaptation premiered on TV Tokyo on October 10, and its second part premiered on January 2. Crunchyroll is streaming the series as it airs in Japan.
Chiaki Kon (Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal: Season III, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal, The Way of the Househusband, Junjō Romantica) is directing the anime at Studio Pierrot. Makoto Uezu (Assassination Classroom, Yuki Yuna Is a Hero, Space Brothers) is overseeing the series scripts, and Airi Taguchi (key animation for Children of the Sea, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? second season) is serving as both character designer and chief animation director. Masato Nakayama (B-PROJECT, We Never Learn: BOKUBEN, You and Me.) is composing the music.
Yen Press is releasing the manga in English in full color, as it was originally released in Japan. The company describes the story:
Enter: a bunch of cool guys who look like they got that unapproachable swag. But let’s be real—that’s not the true them. They’re just a bunch of dorks who’ve got the act down pat. So sit back, grab some popcorn and enjoy watching a bunch of goofy guys try to look cool all day every day. Play It Cool, Guys is a fun collection of stories featuring guys that are equal parts cool and equal parts adorably awkward.
Nata launched the manga in June 2019 on the Gangan pixiv website, where it is ongoing. The manga ranked #16th for the 2020 edition of Takarajimasha‘s Kono Manga ga Sugoi! (This Manga Is Amazing!) guidebook for its female readers list. The manga also placed seventh in pixiv and Nippon Shuppan Hanbai, Inc‘s “Web Manga General Election” in 2019.

Azuki announced on Tuesday that it will digitally publish NAZ and Masato Fujisaki‘s Gloomy Bear: Apocalyptic Love manga based on Mori Chack’s Gloomy Bear character in English on April 4. The one-shot manga will be available on Azuki‘s website as well as on its iOS and Android applications.
Azuki describes the manga’s story:
A young man and woman have kept keychains as mementos of each other, even after they drifted apart. But one day, when they find themselves under attack by zombies, the keychains come to life to protect them! Can Gloomy Bear and All-Purpose Bunny defeat the zombies and bring the two back together?
Mori Chack created the Gloomy Bear character in 2000. The illustrator also created characters such as Podolly and Kumakikai.
The Itazura Guma no Gloomy (Gloomy the Naughty Grizzly) television anime series premiered in April 2021. The anime celebrated the 20th anniversary of the character. Mori had released a “trial” animated short for the character in 2014.

Sakura-Con Screens N. American Premieres for To Every You I’ve Loved Before, To Me, The One Who Loved You, Sasaki and Miyano: Graduation, More Anime
Crunchyroll announced on Tuesday that it will screen the North American premieres for several anime and anime films at this year’s Sakura-Con event at the Seattle Convention Center on April 7-9. including:
This year’s event will host Junya Enoki (voice of Yuji in Jujutsu Kaisen), Yoshihiro Watanabe (Orange studio producer), Waki Kiyotaka (Orange studio chief producer), Kenji Muto (Trigun Stampede director), Hisashi Kagawa (She, The Ultimate Weapon character designer), Junichi Hayama (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood movie director), and Kōhei Eguchi (Eight Bit Co., Ltd. producer).
Last year’s Sakura-Con took place at the Seattle Convention Center on April 15-17, 2022. Sakura-Con 2020 and 2021 were canceled due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Asia Northwest Cultural Education Association hosts Sakura-Con in Seattle annually. It describes the convention as “the oldest and most well attended anime convention in the Pacific Northwest.” The convention started in 1998.
