The official Twitter account of the 1st Niigata International Animation Film Festival announced on Wednesday the world premiere of Yamanaka Sadao ni Sasageru Manga Eiga Nezumikozō Jirokichi (Nezumikozō Jirokichi: A Manga Film Dedicated to Sadao Yamanaka), a film short by director Rintaro (Galaxy Express 999, Metropolis) which will play at the film festival on March 20. The 25-minute “silent animation” film depicts the behind-the-scenes story of the Nezumikozō Jirokichi – Edo no Maki (Nezumikozo Jirokichi – Edo Chapter) film by Sadao Yamanaka – a film director who died at 28 in 1938 – and Yamanaka’s efforts to produce the film. Yamanaka spurred the Japanese film industry’s transition from silent films to talkies.

Yamanaka’s Nezumikozō Jirokichi – Edo no Maki film is about the titular character Nezumikozō Jirokichi, a thief who steals from the rich and gives to the poor, and a townswoman named Osuzu, who leads a tough life with her small child after her husband died.

Rintaro directed the Yamanaka Sadao ni Sasageru Manga Eiga “Nezumikozō Jirokichi” silent animation film at GENCO, Studio M2, and French animation studio Miyu Productions. Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) designed the characters, and Toshiyuki Honda (Metropolis,Tokyo Babylon) composed the music. Mami Koyama voices the film’s benshi (live narrator for silent films).

Disney’s senior manager of English dubbing Reuben Lack stated on Twitter on Monday that the television anime adaptation of Masakazu Ishiguro‘s Heavenly Delusion (Tengoku Dai Makyō) manga will get a simulcast in the U.S. The anime will stream on Hulu in the U.S., Star+ in Latin America, and Disney+ worldwide. The anime will stream exclusively on Disney+ worldwide on April 1, and will air in Japan on Tokyo MX, Hokkaido TV, RKB Mainichi Broadcasting, TV Aichi, MBS, and BS11.

BiSH is performing the opening theme song “innocent arrogance,” and ASOBI is performing the ending theme song “Daremo Karemo Dokomo Nanimo Shiranai” (I Don’t Know Anyone Anywhere Anything).

Denpa is releasing the manga in English, and it describes the story:

Within the safety of the walls, youths are raised in a nursery-style setting by robots. While life there may appear stale on the surface, the children are full of potential and curiosity. In many ways it is like a slice of heaven. The outside world is a hell-scape. It is almost entirely void of anything mechanical and is now inhabited by bizarre, yet powerful super-natural beings.

Maru, with the aid of Kiruko, is out there crisscrossing what was once Tokyo for heaven. But after searching for so long, maybe heaven is more of an untenable dream than a potential reality.

Ishiguro (And Yet the Town Moves) launched the ongoing manga in Kodansha‘s Afternoon magazine in January 2018. The manga had an animated promotional video to commemorate the first volume’s release in July 2018. The manga topped the list of manga for male readers in the 2019 edition of Takarajimasha‘s Kono Manga ga Sugoi! (This Manga Is Amazing!) guidebook.

Azuki announced on Tuesday that it will digitally publish NAZ and Masato Fujisaki‘s Gloomy Bear: Apocalyptic Love manga based on Mori Chack’s Gloomy Bear character in English on April 4. The one-shot manga will be available on Azuki‘s website as well as on its iOS and Android applications.

A young man and woman have kept keychains as mementos of each other, even after they drifted apart. But one day, when they find themselves under attack by zombies, the keychains come to life to protect them! Can Gloomy Bear and All-Purpose Bunny defeat the zombies and bring the two back together?

Mori Chack created the Gloomy Bear character in 2000. The illustrator also created characters such as Podolly and Kumakikai.

The Itazura Guma no Gloomy (Gloomy the Naughty Grizzly) television anime series premiered in April 2021. The anime celebrated the 20th anniversary of the character. Mori had released a “trial” animated short for the character in 2014.
